Jaco is the closest beach town to San Jose, Costa Rica's capital. It's a nice calm comparison to the bustling capital city but it still has high energy nightlife and lots of things to see and do. In fact, it is known for its electric party scene and it's legendary surfing beaches.
Playa Jaco itself is a beautiful light brown sandy beach with surfing waves suitable for beginners and pros alike. And if you are looking for something more tranquil, head to Playa Herradura a few kilometers North for a more secluded beach experience. South of Jaco is also Playa Hermosa, a black sand beach that surfers and beach bums love to spend the day. At certain times of year you may be lucky enough to see the Olive Ridley sea turtles coming to shore to lay their eggs.
With tons of activities offered in town, you will never be bored: ATV tours, surfing, nature hikes, day trips to the Manual Antonio National Park, zip lining, and paddle boarding are just some of the tours available from the many tour operators that line the beach and streets of this lively place.
There are also a refreshing assortment of restaurant from a verity of different cultures including Japanese, Vegetarian, Asian, Costa Rican, American and more. And no matter where your budget lies, you will find a great place to stay right by the beach and in the center of town.
