Visiting a volcano is always a fascinating adventure. Discover the wonders of the Arenal Volcano National Park and experience fun and nature simultaneously. This geological formation has been there for 7,000 years, and knowing it is a privilege that few have.

This article will discover some aspects of the volcano’s geology and when Costa Rica officially named it a national park. In addition, you will find the activities and attractions it offers, ranging from hiking to its hot springs on the slopes of the active volcano.

How was the Arenal Volcano National Park born?

To the north of Costa Rica is the province of Alajuela, where the park is located. It covers more than 12,000 hectares and is 1670 meters above sea level.

This volcano was active at least four times before its last eruption in 1968. In 1991, the State of Costa Rica decided to grant it the status of National Park to protect and conserve it. However, we had to wait until 2010 for the volcanic activity to cease before it could be opened to the public and promoted as an engine of national tourism.

Nature of the Arenal Volcano National Park

This geological wonder, with its conical shape and its slopes full of vegetation, is the center of an exuberant landscape. Although the volcano is not erupting, fumaroles and occasional small explosions can be seen. Experiencing these moments and being able to portray them is an experience that very few live.

Once you arrive at the park, you can enjoy howler monkeys, sloths, and even toucans. There is a considerable variety of bird species. In the case of its vegetation, the number of tropical plants and trees, some endemic, is vast, creating the perfect habitat for each species.

Activities and attractions in the Arenal Volcano National Park

A visit to the park is full of activities that all its visitors enjoy the most. Know how much excitement you’ll get in one place.

Guided hiking

This is the main activity of the place. The routes are very well marked, and you can travel with an expert guide, who will also offer you valuable information about the geology of the place.

Hot Springs

There is a significant concentration of hot springs on the volcano’s slopes. Some of them have a spa with all the services for the comfort of their visitors. These hot water pools in the middle of the tropical jungle are a total experience for all the senses.

Waterfalls

This park has several waterfalls that you will find along the walk, but the most special, due to its height, is La Fortuna. This imposing mass of water flows in free fall from 70 meters high. Visitors can take a refreshing swim in its waters.

Hanging bridges

It is one of the most remarkable attractions. The Arenal Volcano National Park has 19 bridges, 6 of them hanging. The photographs you can take from above are excellent. You will be on top of hectares of forest and jungle.

Lava paths

On this tour, the path is the lava flow from the 1968 eruption. This walk offers a dramatic, beautiful, and unexpected landscape. There is abundant vegetation in the surroundings of that long, dry lava pass. But, as you ascend, you begin to see the volcano in front of you and leave the forest behind.

Lake Arenal

To the west of the park is this lake, where it is possible to enjoy activities such as kayaking. This quiet environment is where you can listen to howler monkeys and many local birds. Did you know that this lake provides Costa Rica with about 40% of its hydroelectric energy?

Extreme proposals

For the adventurer who wants to live wilder experiences, you can also get them in the park itself. These are some of the extreme activities you can do when visiting the volcano:

Rappel to the edge of a 40-meter waterfall

You can jump from one waterfall to another

Cliff jumps ranging from 3 meters

White water rafting

Cycling

Paddle

To enjoy these activities, you must contract a plan to transport you to the site and provide you with the equipment.

How do you get to Arenal Volcano National Park?

Once in San José, it would be best if you took transportation that can take you to two places: the community of La Fortuna or El Castillo. The first has more movement, and the second is more exclusive and quieter. The estimated transfer time is two and a half hours from San José to La Fortuna and 3 hours starting from the same point but to El Castillo.

The simplest and most effective way to do all the activities this park has is to hire tour packages. These types of tours require a lot of planning, so it is more efficient to hire these services. You will find plans that range from a simple full day to complete packages that cover many activities.

Tips for your trip

Some times of the year when it is quieter to walk through the park, mainly in the non-rainy season. It runs from November to April, and the meteorological conditions are more pleasant. There is much to see and do in Arenal Volcano. So that you can calmly enjoy the experience, it is recommended that your stay be at least two days.

What to bring?

It is essential to wear comfortable, breathable clothing for those long walking tours. Plus, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a camera with plenty of battery and memory are available to photograph large, beautiful landscapes.

Discover the wonders of the Arenal Volcano National Park and create memories you will keep forever!

This National Park in Costa Rica is an excellent destination when you want to visit a moving and lovely place. Its imposing active volcano, its biodiversity, and the wide range of activities make it a charming destination where you will always have something to do and see.

Místico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park

Before telling you about the Hanging Bridges, we would like to talk more about this park. This natural paradise has around 650 hectares and is located in a fantastic position. About 250 hectares belong to a protected reserve called Tropical Humid Forest.

As for why it is in a privileged position, you can see the great Arenal volcano from the park. Once you visit this park, you will be enchanted by the beauty of its biodiversity. Once inside the forest, you will be able to observe species of animals you may have never seen in their natural habitat.

Do you like to be in direct contact with Mother Nature? Here, you will find a thousand ways to connect with her. Trails, hanging bridges, different adventures… You’ll want to come back as soon as you’ve left.

Místico Arenal Hanging Bridges

Let’s talk about these fantastic structures within the park without further ado. Traverse the rainforest on a revitalizing tour of these world-famous bridges. It will be around 3 km of fresh, pure air while you cross 16 bridges.

Not a fan of very long walks? Don’t worry. You won’t realize how far you’ve walked in excitement. If you love these tours, you will know that time flies while you enjoy incredible views. On the other hand, you could also take a horseback riding tour through the park.

You should know that you can take different tours once you are on the suspension bridges. For example, you can opt for the Natural History Tour if you prefer something more relaxed. If you like watching birds, then the Bird Watching Tour is ideal.

Natural History Tour

With expert guides in natural history, you can discover all the secrets of this beautiful natural sanctuary. The best of all is that you will be able to meet different species thanks to the guides’ extensive knowledge. You won’t miss anything important on this entire tour.

The guided walk is about 3 km long and crosses the entire private reserve. You will be able to appreciate the forest in all its complexity and witness how the ecosystems interact. Without a doubt, it is a unique experience.

Bird Watching Tour

If you love the idea of observing different species of birds, then this tour is perfect. In the company of a naturalist guide and with an observation team, you will traverse a 2.5 km trail. Of course, part of this trail comprises some of the bridges.

The tour can last between 2 and 3 hours, and you will tour a rainforest with more than 400 species of birds. The bridge’s visibility is fantastic; from them, you will be able to see mass migrations without any problem.

Night Walking Tour

If you are more passionate about the idea of doing the night tour, you will have the opportunity to do so. The night tour of the Hanging Bridges lasts around three and a half hours. Of course, the different species that you will see here will be, for the most part, nocturnal animals.

Insects, owls, different species of reptiles… for some, this night tour is much more exciting. If you’re wondering where it starts, it’s at the Lake Arenal dam.

The best of Místico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park

We have already said that this biological paradise has different species to observe. However, we haven’t given you any examples of the majestic species you can find. Birds are not the only things in this park; there are also different mammals in the forest.

You can find jaguars or pumas among the largest and most fascinating mammals. Do you know or have you seen a tapir or tapir? You are likely to see these species on your tour. This park perfectly unites diverse ecosystems in which vegetation was formed at the different limits of the forest.

The above means that it doesn’t matter if you are observing from above or below; you will always be able to discover something. Different species will always be waiting for you to keep them.

Don’t worry if you have a disability

In this park, they are committed to inclusive tourism, so the amenities could not be better. The trails are completely accessible and friendly to those with disabilities. The concrete is non-slip, there are railings to increase protection, and there are no steps.

Thanks to the accessibility of these paths, people in wheelchairs can do much of the route. There is no excuse not to enjoy a good experience.

Plan your trip to the Arenal Hanging Bridges right now

Have you already decided to take a tour of this fantastic park? Are you excited about the idea of visiting the Hanging Bridges? Then say no more.

If you ask about one of the most beautiful places in Costa Rica, La Fortuna Waterfall is among the answers. This place has enough qualities for visitors to remember it for a long time, unable to feel indifferent to its beauty.

As if that were not enough, getting to this famous waterfall is very easy because it is located in the heart of the Arenal Volcano National Park. This means that if you will be sightseeing in this park for a few days, you can visit it anytime.

However, it is imperative that you know that to see this natural beauty, you must pay an entrance fee. Although it may be somewhat expensive for many, the good thing is that you can stay all day with access to the entire facility. Are you interested in knowing more about this natural attraction? Stay with us until the end.

La Fortuna Waterfall

It is almost impossible not to mention La Fortuna Waterfall when asking about a waterfall in Costa Rica. Both expert travelers and locals agree that this place has an incredible atmosphere, being one of the most popular places in the country.

This waterfall has a 70-meter drop along a sizeable volcanic rock slope, surrounded by a tropical forest. The place, as expected, is quite humid and relaxed, and its location is convenient for the most demanding tourists.

Visitors can enjoy beautiful turquoise waters, which are also very cold. Did you know that although this waterfall is in a national park, it is managed by its association? It is called the La Fortuna Comprehensive Development Association (ADIFORT).

In case you didn’t know, this association was created as a non-profit and is responsible for investing the money collected from visitors. In this way, they ensure that the entire facility is in the best possible condition and contribute to the well-being of their community.

What can you do at La Fortuna Waterfall?

The main attraction for visitors is, without a doubt, La Fortuna Waterfall. However, there are other places to visit besides this beautiful waterfall. We remind you that this is a lovely natural space so that you can find other areas worthy of your attention.

The best thing you can do is visit at least most of these places for a better experience. To make it easier, we will tell you everything you can do during your visit.

● Visit the viewpoint

Don’t want to, or can’t, go down the approximately 530 stairs to reach the entrance to the waterfall? Don’t worry. You can visit the viewpoint. From there, you can enjoy an excellent view of the waterfall and take all the photos you want.

The site is perfectly adapted for those visitors who have reduced mobility. It is an entirely flat area in which you will not have to make any effort to reach and move around. Remember that even if you don’t want to go to the waterfall, you will still have to pay the entrance fee.

● Walk through the Orchid Garden

If you decide to go down to the entrance of La Fortuna Waterfall, then it will be worth it to enter the Orchid Garden. This is located on the left-hand side of the gate, and you will be able to see at least 200 different species of these beautiful plants and their flowers.

The orchids were planted with the mission of contributing to forest conservation since they relate very well to the environment. The best is that you can practically see a flowering garden at any time of the year thanks to the wide variety of species.

● Fortuna River Waterfall

Lastly, the Río Fortuna Waterfall represents the best of this visit. If you could descend to the waterfall’s entrance and climb again about 530 steps, you will enjoy the best of the trip. Although many are scared by the number of steps, you should know that there are rest areas.

You can rest whenever you can and replenish your energy a little while surrounded by thick vegetation that promotes the site’s freshness. When you’re down there, you’ll enjoy an unparalleled view thanks to two viewpoints, but that’s not all.

After passing the viewpoints, you will have access to the famous bathing area, where you can cool off in the best waters on the site. Of course, be careful when approaching the river as it is an area full of very slippery rocks. Likewise, be careful not to bathe in the area where the water breaks directly.

What are the prices and hours?

The stipulated hours for visits to La Fortuna Waterfall are from 7 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon every day of the year. The entrance price is 20 USD for foreigners and 10 USD for nationals. On the other hand, children under eight years old can enjoy the visit for free.

In case you are interested, the facility has free parking and security guards who will keep your vehicle safe. It doesn’t hurt to tip them a little.

Travel to La Fortuna Waterfall

You can get tickets through the official website or directly at the venue’s box office if you want to go alone. However, if you are one of those people who prefer thoroughly planned excursions, there is a better option.

You can contact our agency for more information about this. We can offer you a safe and incredible experience through our professional tours. If you only want to worry about attending, leave everything in our hands and trust us.

Monteverde, Costa Rica serves as the perfect hub for adventure enthusiasts, and Desafio Adventure Company, along with its sister outfitter Monteverde Adventure Company, is thrilled to introduce the most extreme rafting tour on the Tenorio River from the Monteverde Cloud Forest.

Suresh Krishnan, the founder, and owner of Desafio Adventure Company expressed, “Monteverde is the ideal base for adventure, and one of the best rafting experiences is right in our backyard.”

The Tenorio River, classified as a challenging class 3-4 rafting river, is conveniently located less than two hours from Monteverde, nestled in the arid highlands near Cañas at the base of the Cordillera Central mountain range. This area encompasses the Children’s Eternal Rainforest and Arenal Volcano National Park, making it a hotspot for adrenaline-pumping adventures.

Adventure seekers can now embark on a thrilling rafting day trip from Monteverde or include rafting as an Adventure Connection to their favorite Guanacaste Beach destinations like Tamarindo, Samara, or Montezuma.

The highlight of the Extreme rafting on the Tenorio River is the opportunity to plunge over the famous Cascabel Falls—a breathtaking 12-ft waterfall drop at the end of the rafting trip, providing a truly exhilarating experience.

Following the rafting adventure, participants are treated to one of the best traditional meals in Costa Rica—a hearty plate of rice, beans, vegetables, salad, and a choice of meat such as chicken, beef, or fish, commonly known as a Costa Rica casado meal.

In addition to the adrenaline-pumping rafting experience, the Tenorio River also offers a serene safari float on the lower section, as well as river raft fishing excursions.

There’s a river adventure suitable for everyone originating from the Monteverde Cloud Forest on the Tenorio River. Seize the opportunity to try something new and exciting during your visit to Monteverde!

Whether you prefer rafting, a Monkey Boat Safari Float, or river fishing while staying at the beach, make sure to sign up for a Tenorio River tour for an unforgettable day in Costa Rica!

Río Celeste, Costa Rica, is a fairy-tale place you must visit if you find yourself in that beautiful nation. Contact with nature is profound in the “Tenorio Volcano National Park.”

When you travel as a tourist, your greatest desire is to see the most attractive areas of your chosen republic. And in this, you should not miss staying in this natural sector, which has many beauties. Keep reading and find out.

Río Celeste Waterfall: a nature paradise

Its name is because of the turquoise blue color that it possesses. The color uniquely blends blue and green tones, creating a distinct and captivating appearance. It is this color that gives the place its name, setting it apart from other objects with different colorations.

It was created because of two rivers called Buena Vista and Quebrada Agría. When they meet, they generate a chemical reaction that makes that color possible in the cascade’s water. Curiously, the place these rivers join is known as “Teñideros.”

The National Park is in the country’s north. The district to which said park belongs is called Bijagua de Upala, a rural and quite picturesque town. It is surrounded by hills with lots of flora and also cropland. To get to the Río Celeste Falls, you must cross a 1.5 km path.

The first part of the path that leads to the cascade, starting from the central station, is paved; the rest of the road is mud. It is because the land remains wet. After all, it is located in a dense rainforest. Most of the route is flat; however, you will get steep areas and small streams, and rocks, flora, and fauna will surround you.

When you get to the waterfall entry, you come across 250 steps that make up the steps that lead to the base. It would be best to remember that you would not have access to the cascade since swimming in it is prohibited. However, the photographic memories you will take with you will be wonderful.

More fantastic facts about Rio Celeste, Costa Rica

The height of the waterfall of Río Celeste, Costa Rica, is 90 meters, which ends inside a deep turquoise blue pond. This pond and the cascade have thick green vegetation around them. The ideal time to visit is the dry season. That way, you can see its color.

The two rivers that converge to form this fall combine their minerals. Among them are silicone, oxygen, and aluminum. As these three elements remain suspended due to their size, they produce the beautiful color you will see near the waterfall when they come into contact with sunlight.

In addition to all this, you can see and hear different species of birds. One is the “Black-headed Pygmy Tyrant,” a tiny bird.

Another factor that will be perceived with the union of the Buena Vista and Quebrada Agría rivers is the sulfur smell. The particular ailment can be attributed to a chemical reaction that occurs between the element mentioned above and calcium carbonate, leading to its manifestation.

What you should be clear about if you plan to explore it?

Going to the waterfall in Río Celeste, Costa Rica, would be best in December to April. The Tenorio Volcano hours are Monday to Sunday between 8 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon. However, after 2 pm, you can no longer enter the park. You must arrive before that time.

Some park areas may not be open if the weather is stormy. Ideally, you should wear appropriate footwear to walk without problems. In some parts, you will get slimy terrain that can make you slip if your shoes are inappropriate.

The rates to access the park will depend on the type of tourist you are. If you are an adult of Costa Rican nationality or resident, the cost will be ₡800 (Costa Rican colon). For non-residents, the price will be $12 (US dollars).

Other natural attractions of the Tenorio Volcano

The “Tenorio Volcano National Park” has over 12 thousand hectares of jungle area. Consequently, it has other natural attractions, such as the cascade. The names of these other attractions are the following:

• The Tenorio Volcano Viewpoint. With good weather, you will be able to see the volcano massif. It is composed of 5 small inactive cones. You will also observe Cerro Montezuma.

• The Blue Lagoon. It is a natural pool where the turquoise-blue color is most robust. Due to the volcanic waters, the sulfur smell will become more concentrated between this area and the Borbollones area. It would be best to remember that you are not allowed to immerse yourself in them.

• The Borbollones. It has an area of 50 meters. It is named so because of how the river bubbles in this sector, it is a phenomenon that is created by the release of volcanic gases to the surface.

• Dyeing plants. It is the convergence zone of Buena Vista and Quebrada Agría. Although neither of the two rivers has color, the turquoise-blue color appears when they combine minerals.

• Río Celeste Adventures Tubing. It is a river raft tour for one hour and thirty minutes.

It will be an unforgettable walk in this nation’s lively and lush nature—a jungle area is provided with a pure environment that will fill you with excellent energy.

Come to Río Celeste, Costa Rica

Getting closer to nature and recharging your energy is possible in Río Celeste, Costa Rica. This National Park is a jungle full of fascinating places you can explore without any danger—of course, respecting all the warnings they indicate. Enjoy a few magical hours inside this park.

A mother of two teenage boys recently shared her delightful experience during our Arenal Hanging Bridges walking tour at the Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park. She and her husband, accompanied by their elderly mother-in-law, had the privilege of having our guide, Hanzel, all to themselves.

“We got such a great one-on-one experience with your guide,” she enthused. “Hanzel took his time to point out how to spot a snake in the wild, and my kids were so excited. He still made the tour easy-going for my 72-year-old mother-in-law.”

Impressed by the personalized attention, she decided to switch all her reservations to private tours in Costa Rica as an upgraded option.

Later, she emphasized, “Private tours are the way to go, and it wasn’t that much more expensive. You should tell all of your clients to book private tours in Costa Rica!”

This inspired a new topic for our blog.

Private tours offer unparalleled flexibility during your trip to Costa Rica. You can request a private bilingual guide and driver to assist you throughout your travels or on specific excursions in any part of the country. Enjoy the freedom to stop along the way and explore off-the-beaten-path places in Costa Rica at your own pace.

Our private Costa Rica guides take special care to showcase authentic Costa Rica. While we pride ourselves on small-group experiences, a private guide allows for truly individualized attention, providing a deeper connection with the real Costa Rica.

Many tours in the Arenal Volcano area are excellent options for private tours during a Costa Rica family vacation. These include the Monkey Boat Safari float, a volcano hike to the Arenal Volcano, our Arenal COMBO visiting the La Fortuna Waterfall, Arenal Hanging Bridges, and local La Fortuna hot springs. You can also book our Cooking Class and Dinner with your private guide.

For a private rafting trip in Costa Rica, enjoy the comfort of your van equipped with FREE WiFi and a private guide for a personalized safety talk. Your belongings stay safe with your driver while you embark on an exciting rafting trip. A private canyoning tour means immersing yourself in the Costa Rican rainforest, guided by your own professional, certified guides.

A private hike in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is an in-depth exploration of the unique mountain-top region’s natural environment. If you plan a vacation with a stay in the capital city of San José, consider a private San José City Day Tour.

To meet fellow travelers efficiently, we offer private transfers or private Adventure Connections.

Desafío has limited space on its private tours and transfers, so book early to secure the perfect private guide and transport for your Costa Rica vacation.

Experience the Vibrant Traditions of Costa Rica from September to November

If you’re planning a visit to Costa Rica, consider coming between September and November—a time when the country comes alive with rich cultural celebrations and unique traditions. This period offers a unique blend of local experiences and the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in Costa Rican culture.

Seize Off-Season Promotions and Deals

This time of the year is considered the off-season for tourism, making it ideal for travelers to take advantage of special promotions and great deals. Whether you’re interested in adventure tours, nature exploration, or relaxation, off-season offers can provide significant savings.

Behind the Scenes: Enhancing Our Tours and Celebrating Our Team

As tourism slows down, we use this period to enhance our tours, exceed client expectations, and streamline our operations for the upcoming high season. Simultaneously, we celebrate the hard work of our dedicated team. Our employees enjoy over two months of engaging activities, including informative sessions on financial planning, team-building activities, and outdoor adventures.

Independence Day Celebrations: A Unique Costa Rican Tradition

One highlight of this season is the celebration of Costa Rica’s Independence Day on September 15th. This year marked the 196th anniversary of the proclamation of independence. Costa Ricans commemorate this historic event with a symbolic torch relay from Guatemala to Costa Rica. School children eagerly participate, parading around town squares with handmade torches or “faroles.”

As part of our employee appreciation program, we organized a torch-making workshop for our employees’ children, encouraging creativity using recycled materials. This initiative not only celebrates Independence Day but also fosters a sense of community among our staff and their families.

Join the Festivities: Parades, Competitions, and Traditional Meals

Costa Rica’s Independence Day is celebrated with grandeur, featuring early morning bell-ringing ceremonies, parades in major cities, and ornate floats. In our local town, the celebration was particularly significant as the La Fortuna school band recently achieved first place in an international competition.

Families across the country gather during this time for traditional meals such as picadillo, handmade tortillas, and olla de carne meat stew. The festivities provide a unique opportunity to witness Costa Rican patriotism and enjoy the rich culinary heritage.

Plan Your Visit: Embrace Costa Rican Culture and Nature

Make the most of this festive season by planning your visit to Costa Rica. Explore our Costa Rica Vacation itinerary for an authentic experience that captures the true flavors of the country.
