General Information About Private Caño Negro Boat Tour

Explore the Ecological Beauty of Caño Negro and Rio Frio on Our Private Wildlife Refuge Boat Tour!

Experience the wonders of Caño Negro, a remote and ecologically sacred region in Costa Rica, nestled along the Rio Frio. This is an unmissable adventure for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers alike! The Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge spans approximately 10,000 hectares near the Nicaraguan border, making it one of the most pristine and captivating wildlife areas in Costa Rica.

Our journey begins with a scenic drive from La Fortuna, meandering through the picturesque Costa Rican countryside. As we arrive in Caño Negro, you'll step into a realm where nature reigns supreme. The abundance of wildlife here, especially the avian inhabitants, is truly remarkable. Birdwatchers will find paradise in Caño Negro, with the chance to spot the magnificent Jabiru Stork, Central and South America's tallest flying bird. You may also encounter wood storks, cormorants, and a diverse array of bird species, making this tour a birdwatcher's dream.

But it's not just the birds that make Caño Negro exceptional. This lush region is also home to sloths, howler monkeys, and caimans, lending a sense of wonder to the entire journey.

Our adventure continues as we board a comfortable boat at the Los Chiles dock, a 1.5-hour drive from La Fortuna. The boat is equipped with a shaded top for your comfort during the journey. Be sure to bring a hat and sunscreen, along with your camera and binoculars to capture the magic of this wildlife-rich environment. We'll embark on a captivating 2-hour boat tour along the edge of the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge on Rio Frio, providing ample opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife sightings. As a bonus, you'll even have the chance for a memorable photo opportunity at one of the entry points to Nicaragua, Costa Rica's northern neighbor.

During the tour, we'll make a stop to stretch our legs and enjoy a delightful picnic by the riverside, shaded by the lush trees that grace the riverbanks.

Following our riverside picnic, we'll return to the boat for the journey back to the Los Chiles dock, where our van awaits to transport you back to La Fortuna. This incredible adventure promises unforgettable memories and stunning photographs to share with friends and family.
