Lake Arenal is Costa Rica´s largest body of water that covers over 33 square miles (85 square km) and a depth up to 200 feet (60 meters). In 1979, the Costa Rican government embarked on an ambitious hydroelectric project and enlarged Lake Arenal to three times its original size to construct the hydroelectric dam. The small towns of Arenal and Tondadora were flooded and relocated to the northeastern side of the lake. The Arenal Dam is important to Costa Rica and initially generated nearly 70% of the country's electricity, but now an estimated 12-17% of country's electricity comes from the dam. Overall, the Arenal dam has been an important aspect of Costa Rica's green energy policy.
Lake Arenal has a good population of lively machaca and colorful rainbow bass for fishing enthusiasts. Around 120 different species of mammals inhabit the area, such as jaguar and tapir and much more.
After the ride, you will come to the new docking area of the Arenal Volcano National Park Penninsula that leads to a short, but interesting, well-maintained trail within primary and secondary forest that borders Lake Arenal and the outskirts of the national park.
There is a birdwatching tower vistors are welcomed to climb to get some of the best viewsof the surrounding forest, lake and the behemoth Arenal Volcano out in the distance.
We can personalize this trip any way you´d like. Please let us know if you have avid birders in your group, so we can be sure to point out some of the more-elusive birds that inhabit this fertile part of the La Fortuna countryside.
