What is a “Soda” in Costa Rica?

“Sodas” are cute little casual restaurants that serve homemade typical Costa Rican food and are mostly visited by local people. In general, all the dishes in these places have affordable prices and they are abundantly served to satisfy clients.

Don't expect fancy service or international food in a “Soda”. If the “Soda” is busy you might have to wait a little while to be attended or flag down the closest waitress.  Also remember that when you would like to settle the bill, it is customary to go to the counter and ask for it there.  Nevertheless,  sodas are inexpensive and usually serve excellent food .

One of the most liked restaurants in La Fortuna is Soda Viquez. Its just a couple of blocks away from downtown and has has a wonderful open-air dining room that accommodates a large number of people. This friendly spot takes typical recipes and adds something more to it, which  has made it insanely popular among travelers and locals alike. It has a tasty buffet table of ready-made items if you are in a rush, or you can choose from a variety of menu items such as chicken, beef and fish made in six different ways and pasta with special sauces, gordon blue, seafood, and salads.  And if you visit this soda for lunch time, when you finish your plate you will be surprised with a complimentary dessert like rice pudding. Prices are reasonable, portions ample. This is a great place and definitely a MUST GO TO once you are in the area!

We recommend:  The “Casado”. The Casados are huge plates full of a variety of salads and vegetable items, rice and beans, and  your choice of meat, fish, or chicken. Vegetarian casados are also available.  Also try their milkshakes or natural fruit juices.
