LAST CHANCE Adventures in Costa Rica with Desafío Adventure Company

Our Last Chance Adventures in Costa Rica vacation itinerary is a compact, 7 Days and 6 Nights of seeing and doing some of the things that have made Costa Rica famous as the top Eco-Tourism Destination in the world: whitewater rafting, hiking in Cloud Forests, and seeing bountiful wildlife.

Costa Rica makes up less than .01% of the Earth's landmass, but its diverse topography has created numerous climate zones from arid, dry forest on the hot, sunny Northern Pacific Coast to tropical cloud forests high in the mountains along the Continental Divide. Costa Rica has a reported 5% of the world’s biodiversity with an estimated 900 species of birds from motmots and trogans, manakins, parrots and parakeets, kiskadees, kingfishers, as well as the elusive Resplendent Quetzal. This little ecological wonderland has over 500 species of mammals such as 4 species of monkeys, reptiles and amphibians everywhere, a wide array of creepy crawlies like over 9,000 different butterflies and moths and 10,000 identified plant species with new plants and animals being discovered yearly. Costa Rica’s new president recently announced his goal to make Costa Rica the first “carbon neutral” country in the world by 2021.

We call this our LAST CHANCE Adventures in Costa Rica because global climate change, river dams for hydro-electricity, deforestation and other factors are putting this paradise at risk. A great eye-opening, family vacation in Costa Rica.

Be sure to visit Costa Rica now to take full advantage of the beauty it beholds!

DAY 1 Arenal Volcano Area
We pick you up at the San Jose airport (SJO) and whisk you away from the bustling capital city of San José. (There is no problem if you fly into the other international airport at Liberia LIR.)

>>LAST CHANCE: It is said that by 2050, over 80% of the world’s population will live in cities and the trend is the same in Costa Rica. San José’s traffic congestion has grown to the point of stand-still parking lots on the major arteries at rush hour. But you’ll spot Costa Rica’s culture of conservation in many ways on this vacation. Costa Rica has implemented a system to control the congestion and limit the number of cars that circulate downtown on different days – for example, license plates ending in 1 can’t drive on Mondays, 2 on Tuesdays, etc. And there are several public bus lines and a couple of inter and intra-city trains that help diminish the traffic jams, as well as some revitalization programs for downtown neighborhoods.

Your travels will take you along windy roads, rolling hills, through cloud forests and over rivers until you reach the lush Arenal Volcano Area. Have your first natural, farm-to-table delicious meal in Costa Rica. Then take some time to relax in the solar-powered Jacuzzi. Finca Luna Nueva Lodge insists on composting biodegradable waste, like food, emphasizes conserving water, and has a strict recycling regimen. You’ll feel part of an important ecological movement at this innovative rainforest lodge.

HOTEL: Finca Luna Nueva Biodynamic Organic Lodge or similar D

DAY 2 Arenal Volcano Area

Take advantage of the gorgeous grounds of Finca Luna Nueva and explore their surrounding rainforest and amazing gardens. To truly appreciate the area, we recommend an Extreme Hike to the Extinct Cerro Chato Volcano. This 5-6 hour guided excursion takes you through a variety of climatic zones until you reach the crater and peer down upon the mystic, green lagoon that encompasses the inside of the crater. You then hike back down (be careful with your knees and ankles) and can visit the impressive 100-ft La Fortuna Waterfall followed by a snack lunch. You can also opt for a less-extreme hike along the base of the Arenal Volcano.

>>LAST CHANCE: The National Parks system of Costa Rica has threatened to close off the Cerro Chato Volcano to visitors. Community leaders are working to convince officials to develop a comprehensive conservation plan that continues to include visitor hikes to the crater.

From here, you get to explore the quaint little town of La Fortuna and then we take you to one of the natural hot springs resorts to rest your weary muscles, enjoy some health and wellness and have a nice dinner at the hot springs.

>>LAST CHANCE: The hot springs aquifer at the foot of the Arenal Volcano is the largest in the world. But the increase in construction of hot springs resorts and lack of rainfall may be putting stress on limited reserves of water.

Return to the lodge in the early evening and fall asleep to the sounds of the rainforest that surrounds you.

HOTEL: Finca Luna Nueva Biodynamic Organic Lodge B, L, D

DAY 3 Monteverde: Envelop yourself in the Cloud Florest
Take our Van-Boat-Van adventurous boat transfer across Lake Arenal. This man made lake is the second largest lake in Central America. It’s still quite an adventure because the landing on the other side of the lake is a bit of a hike to get to the van that will take you up the incredibly steep, gravel, mountainous road up to Monteverde.

After the bumpy ride up to the mountain, you’ll switch vans to then head over to the Sky Adventures Sky Walk to do a very cool guided walk amongst the clouds of the tree-top canopy.

>>LAST CHANCE: Studies have shown that rainfall is diminishing drastically and there are fewer misty and cloudy days per year in the climate sensitive cloud forests. The coastal waters around the edges Costa Rica have slightly higher temperatures which do not allow the clouds to form and move up to the cooler mountain regions.

You can go out and explore this cowboy town for one of your best culinary treats at one of the eclectic and interesting restaurants of the area. From there, snuggle up in your cozy mountain-top cabin.

HOTEL: Los Cipreses Lodge or similar B

DAY 4 Playa Samara: Rafting on the way!!
Get ready for adventure! Go rafting today on one of the only naturally-flowing rivers in Costa Rica. The Río Tenorio Class 3-4 river is on the way to the beach, so we let the journey be the adventure today and go rafting on the way!
Finish with a plentiful, home-cooked meal. And if you’re looking for something less adventurous, try our eye opening and entertaining Monkeyboat Safari Float on the lower section of the Río Tenorio river.

>>LAST CHANCE: Costa Rica relies heavily on the production of hydroelectric power. We have had to change rafting operations three times because we can no longer use certain rivers for rafting and there are 40 more dams planned in the near future. We are in danger of losing our rafting industry in Costa Rica.

You’ll likely take a little nap after this grand adventure as we continue another 2 hours to one of Costa Rica’s best, but little-discovered Playa Samara.

HOTEL: Nammbu or similar B, L

DAY 5 Playa Samara: Time for Dolphin Seeing or Turtle Observing

We love this beach because it still has that small town, Costa Rican feel with a group of old-time "artesanal" fisherman who still go out daily to bring back their catch to sell to local markets and restaurants.

>>LAST CHANCE: Fishing is an increasingly difficult way to make a living in Costa Rica. Large ships are reportedly stationed off the coasts of Costa Rica and dredge up almost all of the marine life of the area, threatening the longevity of this important industry.

You can head out on our Dolphin Seafari Adventure catamaran boat ride and do some snorkeling. Or, if it’s turtle season, take an evening walk at the Camaronal or Ostional National Reserve to catch the site of endangered sea turtles laying their eggs.

HOTEL: Nammbu or similar B

DAY 6 Playa Samara: Time to relax!! FREE DAY on the beach!!

HOTEL: Nammbu or similar B

DAY 7 San José: Head back to reality – take a private transfer back to the airport to catch your flight home. We hope you enjoyed the Pura Vida -- Pure Life -- of Costa Rica!
