Jason Rocks Gravity Falls
by Jason Salas, Adventure Specialist
My first tour and the best one we have is definitely Gravity Falls! The first time I went was in August and I got picked up at headquarters and the guides made the ride fun. I remember my guides were Joshua and Edward and they were the coolest guys. They made me feel 100% safe the whole time. I was also with a father and son from the US on my tour and they had the best time. It was fun to watch them.
The rappelling made me feel like I was a jungle explorer discovering the canyon for the first time. The scenery was amazing and the weather was perfect. I loved the typical Costa Rican lunch after. It was really satisfying! What was amazing is how FAST the time went. I really enjoyed it 100%.
The cool thing about this tour is that I know when I tell clients about it, I am completely confident that they will love it. It is the most adventure you can have!
Jason Salas is a member of the Desafio Sales team. you can meet this handsome, young man with an awesome smile when you visit our La Fortuna office.

On my days off I love going home. My last day off I went and did a few things I have never done before. My mother wanted me to go walk with her and dad around our family's property. I am not so into walking through orange, yuca, avocado, and papaya plants, especially because I don't like the mud nor the mosquito bites you get while you’re going through these plantations. But just to make my mother happy and spend some time with my biggest heroes, I ignored all that and joined them. It was quite funny because to start off with, I was wearing sandals as my footwear (the first thing mom told me was that they were going to get dirty and that I was most likely going to get stuck in some muddy part where it would be impossible to get out of—and she was right). So after losing my shoes in the mud, I had to keep walking barefoot through our land, I stepped on a frog which I am terribly afraid off. My mom couldn´t stop laughing at my bad luck that day. My dad, on the other hand, cut down a coconut, or ¨pipa¨ as we call it, so I could calm down from the panic I just experienced. On our way through our property, I got to eat oranges, mangos, sweet lemon, star fruit, and rambutan—a reward for having suffered through the frog and my sandal getting stuck. On our way back, dad was explaining to me how he inherited the land from my grandfather. I loved knowing how my grandfather worked so hard on the same property I was walking though (for the first time). As we passed through my grandma´s house, my mom told me to get the goat, who was named ¨Andy¨ by my baby sister, from under the tree where they kept him. I thought she was joking around so I didn´t pay much attention to her until she actually got serious and told me I had to get the goat. I had never in my life gotten close to a goat, so when I saw Andy with those big horns I panicked again. She did not tell me I had to hold on to the rope very tight or else the goat was pretty much going to drag me down, nor did she mention that the goat was going to stand up on two legs and kick me. When Andy did these things I pretty much wished with all my heart I was back in Desafio’s office working. I realized my mom and dad were laughing so hard at me because I had been defeated by a small goat with two HUGE horns. Somehow, I brought the goat to where mom wanted (actually I think the goat got me where mom wanted us to be). That night, my high school friends came over and they "taught" me how to drive a motorcycle. I am afraid of motorcycles, but after some encouragement from my crazy friends I decided to try it (afterall, it couldn´t be worse than a goat name Andy). I pretty much ended up on the floor with a few bruises, but thankfully, I was in a soccer field so the floor was pretty soft. It ended up being a huge challenge for me, especially the whole balancing part and my trouble reaching the floor because I am very short. Somehow I did manage to ride the motorcycle for a full 10 minutes without falling, which was enough for me after kissing the floor so much. The next day, I couldn´t help but laugh at everything that happened to me; of course I couldn´t laugh too hard because I was bruised from Andy´s kick and the motorcycle falls.
It was a very funny experience and one that I will never forget. This day proved to me how important it is to try new things, no matter how afraid you are of them. This, and many more reasons, is why I love going home on my days off, because it´s the place I will always run back to when I need love with some craziness mixed in.

Osvaldo Conquers His Fears on the MAMBO COMBO by Osvaldo VegaThe first tour I went on with Desafio was about a year and a half ago and it was the Mambo Combo. The two tours that our company is most famous for, rafting and canyoneering – combined into one day! I went with two other co-workers Veronica and Rocio. We were quite the trio, with me being afraid of heights and they were both afraid of water. It was the first time I had ever done anything like that before and I was really nervous to face my fear of heights. As soon as we started the tour, the girls laughed at me because I was shaking so badly. But we had an excellent guide, Hernan, with us and he showed me what to do. The Lost Canyon was really great because it starts with the smallest rappel first to let you learn what you are doing. I slowly began to get more comfortable as we went on and then we got to the big 60 meter waterfall and my heart was beating out of my chest. I started little by little going down and then the guides yelled at me to let go. I did let go (literally) and it was amazing! I knew that I had conquered my fear. We then walked up a trail and had a really delicious lunch. After only about a half hour we headed out for the rafting trip on Rio Balsa. This part I was really excited about because I absolutely love the water! I grew up in Puntarenas and playing on beaches and in rivers and was excited about combining the water and adrenaline together. This time it was the girls who were shaking because they were nervous! The two other women with us wanted to ride in the back so one of my co-workers had to ride up front with me. Within 10 minutes of being in the boat, my co-workers were having a great time and not afraid anymore. They were both really brave and even jumped in when we came to a calm spot in the river. Everyone enjoyed the refreshing water splashing all over us. We even got to "ride the bull" where we got to ride on the front of the raft. It was so much fun.The tour really changed my impression of the company. As an IT guy, we don't get out from behind the computers very much. After that, I really understood the essence of the company and what it was that we were doing. It was a really cool experience and I was happy to discover what the company was all about and the adventure and happiness we bring to people. I never would have understood my part of the overall team and puzzle if had not left my desk. I have done other tours since then, but I will never forget that first one – the Mambo Combo!
