Tortugero, Costa Rica is one of the most popular eco-tourism destinations and one of the most biologically diverse places to visit in Costa Rica because
of the diverse landscape and waterways. It is only possible to get there by boat or small airplane from the San Jose airport.
The town of Tortuguero has a small population of 500 people with a small amount of hotels, restaurants and souvenir stores. But that's not why people
visit - they visit for the abundance of nature and wildlife that exists in the Tortuguero National Park.
The meeting of freshwater canals and the Caribbean sea has created an immense amount of biodiversity. There are over 300 species of birds, 60 species of
mammals, over 100 species of reptiles, 57 species of amphibians and two types of monkeys. Rent a kayak or canoe and paddle through the
canals to witness crocodiles, tropical birds, white faced monkeys, iguanas, poison dart frogs, two toed sloths and more.
As one of the largest breeding grounds of the green sea turtle, one of the most popular things to do in Tortuguero is seeing the sea turtles lay
their eggs on the beach. On a waning moon at certain times of the year, thousands of turtles come out from the sea to lay their eggs in
the warm sand for 7 to 10 weeks. Your presence helps this endangered species by scaring away animal predators and humans that go to rob
their eggs.
There are a wide range of hotels in Tortuguero from canal-side Eco-lodges to beach side resorts. There are also a plethora of tours and activities in
Tortuguero like boat tours, birdwatching tours, zipline adventures and much more.
