Going from San José to La Fortuna is easy, fast, safe, and fun. The truth is that there are different means to reach this symbolic and extraordinary destination. And the types of transfers that exist now have duration, costs, and levels of comfort that are very different.

Therefore, it is crucial that you thoroughly investigate the appropriate means of transportation that will take you to your destination. This way, you can compare prices evaluate departure times, the type of service provided, and the degree of comfort you expect to obtain. In short, this way, you will plan your route better. Discover the different ways to get from the capital of Costa Rica to the capital of adventure.

Being able to travel from San José to La Fortuna in Costa Rica

Getting from San José to La Fortuna in Costa Rica, whether taking the public bus or via a commercial flight, will be an enriching experience. The truth is that visiting one of the most unique and emblematic wonders of Costa Rica has become one of the most fascinating journeys of the moment.

La Fortuna is, without a doubt, the country’s most striking and notable vacation destination. This is due to its landscapes and the different activities and recreations the place offers.

You can visit the Arenal Volcano, La Fortuna Waterfall, Chollín River, and more on this trip. But the best of all is that the transfer from one place to another is guaranteed. What’s more, you will find different ways to reach your dream destination during all months of the year.

The different ways to get from San José to La Fortuna

There are various means to get from San José, Costa Rica to La Fortuna. La Fortuna is located about 131 kilometers by land from the metropolitan capital city of Costa Rica. To get there it can take approximately 4 hours.

Although you can get to the place faster by direct flight, you can also do it aboard a bus or private transfer. Of course, everything will depend on your budget and the means of transportation you prefer.

1. Public bus service

The public bus service is a convenient and affordable option to complete this enigmatic journey. It would be best to take a direct bus to the Atlántico Norte bus terminal. Due to passenger demand, direct tourist buses leave from the city center 1 or 2 times a day daily.

• Duration of the trip: 4-5 hours, which will depend, to a large extent, on traffic in the area.

• Cost of the ticket (ticket): 6-8 dollars.

In addition, you can travel on regular buses indirectly to La Quesada, then you must take another bus to your destination. Locals usually use this route because these buses leave more frequently. Likewise, you can travel by bus from the La Radial Bus Station (near the airport), this bus leaves at 6:30 am.

2. Car rental

It is a comfortable, safe, fast, and attractive alternative from San José to Fortuna, Costa Rica. And if you like driving on the beautiful roads of this country, there is nothing better than doing it aboard a rental car. The road that connects both places is well-paved, and the route is easily accessible for tourists.

• Duration of the trip: approximately 3 hours of travel.

• The cost of this service is 30 and 40 dollars per day (certain conditions apply). Traveling in small groups is ideal so that it will be cheaper.

To use this convenient service, contacting car rental stores directly in the capital city is best. At the airport, you will get very reliable offers.

To begin your journey by car, you have two routes to follow. Through San Ramón, take the Inter-American highway and cross the mythical town. It is the most direct and recommended route for tourists. On the contrary, you can do it through Ciudad Quesada.

3. Group transportation service – Minivan

A trendy and comfortable way to travel from San José, Costa Rica, to La Fortuna, Costa Rica, is by minibus. This alternative is very convenient for group transfers. Minivan services allow shared trips for ten people.

• The transfer can cost between 40 and 55 dollars per person.

• The duration of the tour is three and a half hours.

This type of shared transportation leaves from the main airport and drops you off at the entrance of the reserved hotel. It is a less stressful, faster, and less expensive service than hiring a private service.

4. Flight

If you have little time to make your trip from San José to La Fortuna, you can take a commercial flight from the International Airport. It is located very close to the city center and is easily accessible. You can arrive by taxi or by bus.

• The flight time is 1 hour and 50 minutes.

• The approximate cost of the flight will depend on the airline. Rates range from $40 to $130.

You should check flight availability in advance for greater security. Although there are airlines that fly to this destination daily, the truth is that this is not always the case. Everything will depend on the time of year you want to visit La Fortuna.

Likewise, to go from La Fortuna to San José Costa Rica or vice versa, there are exclusive private transportation services and services for day trips that will facilitate your transfer. Although these services have a high cost per person, they are convenient for those looking to travel comfortably and safely.

As you can see, traveling from San José to La Fortuna is very easy to achieve. Just select the most convenient alternative for you. And some options range from 6 dollars per person to 130 dollars. Although not all of these means of transportation have the comfort you want when traveling, the truth is that all of them are safe and very reliable.

If you ask about one of the most beautiful places in Costa Rica, La Fortuna Waterfall is among the answers. This place has enough qualities for visitors to remember it for a long time, unable to feel indifferent to its beauty.

As if that were not enough, getting to this famous waterfall is very easy because it is located in the heart of the Arenal Volcano National Park. This means that if you will be sightseeing in this park for a few days, you can visit it anytime.

However, it is imperative that you know that to see this natural beauty, you must pay an entrance fee. Although it may be somewhat expensive for many, the good thing is that you can stay all day with access to the entire facility. Are you interested in knowing more about this natural attraction? Stay with us until the end.

La Fortuna Waterfall

It is almost impossible not to mention La Fortuna Waterfall when asking about a waterfall in Costa Rica. Both expert travelers and locals agree that this place has an incredible atmosphere, being one of the most popular places in the country.

This waterfall has a 70-meter drop along a sizeable volcanic rock slope, surrounded by a tropical forest. The place, as expected, is quite humid and relaxed, and its location is convenient for the most demanding tourists.

Visitors can enjoy beautiful turquoise waters, which are also very cold. Did you know that although this waterfall is in a national park, it is managed by its association? It is called the La Fortuna Comprehensive Development Association (ADIFORT).

In case you didn’t know, this association was created as a non-profit and is responsible for investing the money collected from visitors. In this way, they ensure that the entire facility is in the best possible condition and contribute to the well-being of their community.

What can you do at La Fortuna Waterfall?

The main attraction for visitors is, without a doubt, La Fortuna Waterfall. However, there are other places to visit besides this beautiful waterfall. We remind you that this is a lovely natural space so that you can find other areas worthy of your attention.

The best thing you can do is visit at least most of these places for a better experience. To make it easier, we will tell you everything you can do during your visit.

● Visit the viewpoint

Don’t want to, or can’t, go down the approximately 530 stairs to reach the entrance to the waterfall? Don’t worry. You can visit the viewpoint. From there, you can enjoy an excellent view of the waterfall and take all the photos you want.

The site is perfectly adapted for those visitors who have reduced mobility. It is an entirely flat area in which you will not have to make any effort to reach and move around. Remember that even if you don’t want to go to the waterfall, you will still have to pay the entrance fee.

● Walk through the Orchid Garden

If you decide to go down to the entrance of La Fortuna Waterfall, then it will be worth it to enter the Orchid Garden. This is located on the left-hand side of the gate, and you will be able to see at least 200 different species of these beautiful plants and their flowers.

The orchids were planted with the mission of contributing to forest conservation since they relate very well to the environment. The best is that you can practically see a flowering garden at any time of the year thanks to the wide variety of species.

● Fortuna River Waterfall

Lastly, the Río Fortuna Waterfall represents the best of this visit. If you could descend to the waterfall’s entrance and climb again about 530 steps, you will enjoy the best of the trip. Although many are scared by the number of steps, you should know that there are rest areas.

You can rest whenever you can and replenish your energy a little while surrounded by thick vegetation that promotes the site’s freshness. When you’re down there, you’ll enjoy an unparalleled view thanks to two viewpoints, but that’s not all.

After passing the viewpoints, you will have access to the famous bathing area, where you can cool off in the best waters on the site. Of course, be careful when approaching the river as it is an area full of very slippery rocks. Likewise, be careful not to bathe in the area where the water breaks directly.

What are the prices and hours?

The stipulated hours for visits to La Fortuna Waterfall are from 7 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon every day of the year. The entrance price is 20 USD for foreigners and 10 USD for nationals. On the other hand, children under eight years old can enjoy the visit for free.

In case you are interested, the facility has free parking and security guards who will keep your vehicle safe. It doesn’t hurt to tip them a little.

Travel to La Fortuna Waterfall

You can get tickets through the official website or directly at the venue’s box office if you want to go alone. However, if you are one of those people who prefer thoroughly planned excursions, there is a better option.

You can contact our agency for more information about this. We can offer you a safe and incredible experience through our professional tours. If you only want to worry about attending, leave everything in our hands and trust us.

Río Celeste, Costa Rica, is a fairy-tale place you must visit if you find yourself in that beautiful nation. Contact with nature is profound in the “Tenorio Volcano National Park.”

When you travel as a tourist, your greatest desire is to see the most attractive areas of your chosen republic. And in this, you should not miss staying in this natural sector, which has many beauties. Keep reading and find out.

Río Celeste Waterfall: a nature paradise

Its name is because of the turquoise blue color that it possesses. The color uniquely blends blue and green tones, creating a distinct and captivating appearance. It is this color that gives the place its name, setting it apart from other objects with different colorations.

It was created because of two rivers called Buena Vista and Quebrada Agría. When they meet, they generate a chemical reaction that makes that color possible in the cascade’s water. Curiously, the place these rivers join is known as “Teñideros.”

The National Park is in the country’s north. The district to which said park belongs is called Bijagua de Upala, a rural and quite picturesque town. It is surrounded by hills with lots of flora and also cropland. To get to the Río Celeste Falls, you must cross a 1.5 km path.

The first part of the path that leads to the cascade, starting from the central station, is paved; the rest of the road is mud. It is because the land remains wet. After all, it is located in a dense rainforest. Most of the route is flat; however, you will get steep areas and small streams, and rocks, flora, and fauna will surround you.

When you get to the waterfall entry, you come across 250 steps that make up the steps that lead to the base. It would be best to remember that you would not have access to the cascade since swimming in it is prohibited. However, the photographic memories you will take with you will be wonderful.

More fantastic facts about Rio Celeste, Costa Rica

The height of the waterfall of Río Celeste, Costa Rica, is 90 meters, which ends inside a deep turquoise blue pond. This pond and the cascade have thick green vegetation around them. The ideal time to visit is the dry season. That way, you can see its color.

The two rivers that converge to form this fall combine their minerals. Among them are silicone, oxygen, and aluminum. As these three elements remain suspended due to their size, they produce the beautiful color you will see near the waterfall when they come into contact with sunlight.

In addition to all this, you can see and hear different species of birds. One is the “Black-headed Pygmy Tyrant,” a tiny bird.

Another factor that will be perceived with the union of the Buena Vista and Quebrada Agría rivers is the sulfur smell. The particular ailment can be attributed to a chemical reaction that occurs between the element mentioned above and calcium carbonate, leading to its manifestation.

What you should be clear about if you plan to explore it?

Going to the waterfall in Río Celeste, Costa Rica, would be best in December to April. The Tenorio Volcano hours are Monday to Sunday between 8 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon. However, after 2 pm, you can no longer enter the park. You must arrive before that time.

Some park areas may not be open if the weather is stormy. Ideally, you should wear appropriate footwear to walk without problems. In some parts, you will get slimy terrain that can make you slip if your shoes are inappropriate.

The rates to access the park will depend on the type of tourist you are. If you are an adult of Costa Rican nationality or resident, the cost will be ₡800 (Costa Rican colon). For non-residents, the price will be $12 (US dollars).

Other natural attractions of the Tenorio Volcano

The “Tenorio Volcano National Park” has over 12 thousand hectares of jungle area. Consequently, it has other natural attractions, such as the cascade. The names of these other attractions are the following:

• The Blue Lagoon. It is a natural pool where the turquoise-blue color is most robust. Due to the volcanic waters, the sulfur smell will become more concentrated between this area and the Borbollones area. It would be best to remember that you are not allowed to immerse yourself in them.

• The Borbollones. It has an area of 50 meters. It is named so because of how the river bubbles in this sector, it is a phenomenon that is created by the release of volcanic gases to the surface.

• Dyeing plants. It is the convergence zone of Buena Vista and Quebrada Agría. Although neither of the two rivers has color, the turquoise-blue color appears when they combine minerals.

• Río Celeste Adventures Tubing. It is a river raft tour for one hour and thirty minutes.

Lost Canyon Adventures: A Life-Changing Canyoning Experience in Costa Rica

By Selina Walker

Desafio: To Challenge, To Explore, To Inspire, or is it… Desafio: To Challenge, to Explore, To CHANGE LIVES?

After last week’s challenging canyoneering tour in the Lost Canyon of Costa Rica, I strongly believe the latter is correct.

Sonja D. from the United States wrote us a heartfelt thank-you letter detailing her challenging and life-changing experience in our Lost Canyon. She expressed, “It was really important for me to do the waterfall rappelling. But, our first attempt at the tour resulted in me having a panic attack.”

Though she didn’t complete the tour as intended, our guides supported her, allowing her to still enjoy aspects like a small cliff jump, the canyon’s surprise “Tsunami,” and maneuvering through the rocky terrain. While happy, she didn’t feel complete because she didn’t achieve her initial goal.

Sonja recounts, “The following day (after the tour), I felt like I had failed and needed to go back (and do it again).”

And so she returned to the Lost Canyon, completing the entire tour, including the most challenging parts like the 200 ft waterfall rappel! “It was a LIFE-CHANGING experience that I so desperately needed,” says Sonja.

We are immensely proud of Sonja and all the adventurers on this tour, as it truly is Costa Rica’s MOST Extreme Tour.

Sometimes, we observe clients hesitating at the top of the waterfalls before rappelling, recognizing that these are the individuals who may undergo the most transformative experiences. They have the potential to overcome what is holding them back: fear.

This is why people leave this tour feeling refreshed and energized. There is something about facing your fear that leaves you inspired and renewed. Jumping off a cliff can be that symbolic “leap of faith” you may have been seeking in your life.

As Eliomar Duran Vargas, the Canyoning Leader, says, “On this tour, you can’t think; you just have to do it. Don’t let fear control you. And when you are at the bottom, you will be so happy and proud of yourself for doing something you never thought you could do.”

And this is true. We witness it every day.

So, whether you’re up for the challenge of our classic Lost Canyon Adventures Canyoning or our more extreme Gravity Falls Waterfall Jumping, we eagerly anticipate providing you with plenty of life-changing experiences on your vacation in Costa Rica.
