Over the years, Desafio Adventure Company has garnered a reputation for being one of the top innovators of adventure in Costa Rica and a visionary in the touristic hub of La Fortuna.
This week, the well-established company, roots firmly embedded in 25 years of experience in adventure tourism, branched out and brought its iconic creativity and innovation to its partner company to the north: Summit Adventures Nicaragua, located in – you guessed it – León City, Nicaragua.
Together, the sister companies did something that had never been done before. They launched a raft down the side of an active volcano and immediately created a new touristic sensation: volcano rafting.
Despite being Nicaragua’s youngest active volcano, Cerro Negro towers over the surrounding rainforest at 726 m (2378ft) above sea level. It boasts one steeply inclined slope covered in volcanic sand which has made it a popular destination for adventurers looking to try their hand at sand boarding (also known as volcano boarding).
The hike to the top of this majestic giant is challenging but doable for healthy individuals with an average fitness level and the views from the top and along the way are absolutely stunning. Steam and gas emissions can be seen from the top of the crater, reminding adventurous hikers of the volcanic activity bubbling just beneath the giant’s surface.
Tourists from all over the world have been flocking to Cerro Negro for the past few years to experience the adrenaline rush that accompanies flying down its slope on light-weight sleds made of wood and laminate. Now, for the first time in history, adventure travelers can upgrade their sleds to a raft with capacity for up to six people. It’s a completely new and unique experience that’s offered exclusively through Summit Adventures Nicaragua and Desafio Adventure Company.
