I was Inspi(red) today

I WAS INSPI(RED) TODAY

I was Inspi(red) today

by Christine Krishnan, Community Builder

Today I wore my favorite red t-shirt. It says Inspi(red) on it. I bought it for 800 colones (roughly a US$1.30) at my favorite "Ropa Americana" or local thrift store.

I had no idea what the shirt represented when I bought it , but it got me thinking about all of the things that inspire me about living in Costa Rica, especially at the base of the Arenal Volcano.

Costa Rica Inspirations:

I wore my Inspi(red) t-shirt to my morning fitness class. I am inspired by the Costa Rican owner Anibal Castro who saw a niche for the health craze and made a huge investment and built a modern, well-equipped three-story gym right in downtown La Fortuna. There are fancy machines, lots of free weights, a whole team of stationary bikes for Spinning Classes and a nice space for a Cross-fit-style class.

The people who routinely attend my early morning class are generally middle-aged Costa Rican mothers and a few cute young Ticas. We have had a handful of young men try to keep up with us, but they tend to only last a couple of weeks complaining of how hard the class is.

I am inspired by several of the women in the class who struggle with heart conditions or have undergone severe thyroid treatments and still manage to kick my butt during class.

I am inspired by our faithful trainer who has been a big fitness freak for as long as he can remember (weight lifting, martial arts, etc.) who saw an opportunity to move away from hectic San Jose and live in our small community. He keeps a watchful eye on our every move, pushing us when we need to and correcting us, urging us on.

I am inspired by the young girls who are discussing their training schedule for the next triathlon they will compete in as I walk by.

I wipe the sweat from my brow as I walk down the stairs past posters of upcoming mountain bike races and a 10k run in support of keeping kids off drugs.

I step outside and can't help but be inspired by our great, big behemoth Arenal Volcano off in the near distance.

La Fortuna is blessed by a moderate temperature all-year-long, access to a plethora of fresh fruits and vegetables and meat with limited use of bad hormones and chemicals and the perfect terrain for training and staying fit.

There are great bike trails, challenging places to run up hills, through rainforests, an exhilarating secret swimming hole and an awesome, clean freshwater lake.

You're bound to be inspired, too.
