MONTEVERDE
The Spanish translation for Monteverde is "green mountain" – and this is the perfect name for this peaceful, hillside community. Monteverde was founded by a Quaker community over 50 years ago, seeking refuge from participating in the Korean War. Monteverde sits along the continental divide right in the middle of Costa Rica. The Atlantic and Pacific sides of the mountain contain an astounding amount of biodiversity of nearly 400 different types of bird species and the area is home to 2 types of the sloth, the white-faced monkey, agoutis, pizotes, kinkajous, porcupines, skunk, fox, coyote, armadillo, bats, reptiles, frogs, snakes, just to name a few! In terms of insects, Monteverde is a kingdom of creepy crawlies, butterflies, spiders, scorpions and more!
One of the most popular activities is a three-hour hike through the Children’s Eternal Rainforest or Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve for great bird watching, especially for those who want to catch a glimpse fo the elusive resplendent quetzal - with its crimson breast and iridescent green plumage.
The Children's Eternal Rain Forest (Bosque Nuboso Eterno de Los Niños) is a private, nonprofit association of Costa Rican and International members and manages and preserves the 50.000 acres of rainforest for current and future generations. It is the largest private reserve in Central America and connects La Fortuna with Monteverde as part of the one of the most-important biological corridors in the Americas. The Children's Eternal Rain Forest carries out various projects related to research, education, protection, habitat rehabilitation and volunteering, including with our own Proyecto Asís on the Arenal Volcano side of the continental divide.
